"Alka Seltzer"

Roy Lichtenstein - Graphite - 76 x 55 cm

famous painting Alka Seltzer of Roy Lichtenstein
In 1961, Roy started basing his works on cartoon images. For ten years he had been involved in the gallery scenes when he suddenly decided to take this strange course. His style became famous in the 1960s as a movement often marked by the term “Pop Art”. Untill 1968, Roy subversively used illustration styles that were commercial. He made a series of such paintings in black-and-white, where he demonstrated daily idiosyncrasies by focusing on smaller domestic acts. He used the comic standard Ben Day Dots in his works. By drawing flat shapes of graphite, he imitated the aesthetic of advertising and at the same time, he could show the surface of the glass as reflective. According to Isabelle Dervaux, Roy showed great inclination throughout the 1960s towards the reflection of light upon moving water. “Alka Seltzer” is a significant piece in his oeuvre because it bridges the gap between his older graphite inclusive style and the new Pop Art he was about to embrace.
