carlo teodoro duclère was an italian landscape painter, born in naples in 1812 and associated with the school of posillipo. his artistic education began at a young age, attending lessons at the studio of anton sminck van pitloo, a dutch-born painter. later, he enrolled at the academy of fine arts, where he studied under van pitloo, who had been appointed to the chair of landscape painting.

early life and education

duclère's father, jacques-françois théodore duclère, was from seine-et-marne, france, and came to italy during the napoleonic wars. he met and married teodoro's future mother, costanza lepori, in rome and they settled in naples. from 1829 to 1831, duclère regularly participated in the academy of fine arts competitions, where he came under the influence of the school of posillipo, led by salvatore fergola and giacinto gigante.

career and influences

after completing his studies, duclère toured southern italy, visiting sicily, puglia, and campania. upon returning, in 1838, he married sofia van pitloo, the daughter of his teacher. they had five daughters together. in 1849, he was named to a commission considering reforming the academy of fine arts. in 1861, he became a member of the academy, largely upon the recommendation of eugenio emanuele di savoia-villafranca, an aide to king victor emmanuel ii.
