early life and training
claes corneliszoon moeyaert, a prominent dutch painter, was born in durgerdam, netherlands in 1592. as a young man, he is believed to have traveled to italy to experience its art, which would later influence his work. at the age of 25, he married grietje claes in 1617.
artistic career
moeyaert's artistic career was marked by his use of red chalk, a technique also employed by rembrandt. he collaborated with pieter lastman in st. antoniesbreestraat and designed amsterdam's triumphal arch for the arrival of
maria de medici. on september 1, 1638, he witnessed her procession from the spaarndammerdijk.

legacy and later life
moeyaert was a wealthy man with three children, two of whom were mentally challenged and cared for in his own home. he had stakes in the business of
hendrick van uylenburgh, a famous art dealer related to rembrandt's wife,
saskia van uylenburgh. moeyaert co-managed the van campen theatre with
jan vos for many years. he lived in a house on the singel, near torensluis, until his death in 1655.
