German-born artist and teacher John Gutmann fled the Nazis in 1933, settling in San Francisco, where he turned his artistic focus to photo-journalism. An outsider—as a Jew in Germany and a naturalized citizen in the United States—he focused his lens on the wide breadth of communities documenting the diverse American cultural landscape.
