Popis sběratelského kusu

Newell HarryBorn in Sydney, Australia, in 1972.He lives and works in Sydney.Works:behind: Untitled (Anagrams + Objects for R.U. & R.U, Part I)front: Untitled (Black Sabbath and other Anecdotes) Newell Harry’s cross-cultural itinerary informs a rich oeuvre that explores historical and present-day instances of migrations of people, objects, and languages across the Pacific Ocean. The artist’s works often appropriate elements of tribal art to deploy and subvert their social functions. For instance, his currency weavings address the alternative notions of value, currency, and exchange that govern the tribal economies of the Vanuatu archipelago, where Harry spends much of his time. Other works draw on the islands’ creolized languages: Vanuatu’s main language of Bislama—a mixture of English, French, and Portuguese— is spoken in some 120 different dialects. Through his engagement with those highly idiomatic structures, the artist addresses larger questions about the complex translations that underlie all cultural exchange. Commonly referred to as “gift mats,” the tapa cloths onto which Harry prints his anagrams have great social significance in various Pacific cultures: Tapa cloths are donated to commemorate significant life events, such as birth or marriage. By appropriating those personal presents for his art, he subtracts them from the gift economy and instead places them into circulation in the art world. Oscillating between the personal and the impersonal, Harry’s works are also tongue-in-cheek references to the word games of conceptual art. Yet while he outsources the production of the tapa cloths, the anagrams he prints onto them—which switch from English to Bislama and vice versa—are personal jokes known only to the artist and his friends. In addition to the anagram gift mats, photographs from Harry’s stays in India, Vanuatu, and Tonga further testify to the many human encounters that inspire his art practice.

Newell Harry: A Critique of Globalization Through Everyday Objects

Australian artist Newell Harry’s work stands apart in its ability to distill complex socio-cultural concerns into deceptively simple visual forms—primarily installations and sculptures crafted from commonplace materials like plastic bags, flip-flops, and souvenirs. Born in Sydney in 1972, Harry's artistic trajectory has been marked by a consistent engagement with themes of cultural identity, globalization’s impact on marginalized communities, and the pervasive influence of consumer culture. Rather than grand narratives or overtly didactic statements, his art operates through subtle juxtapositions that provoke contemplation about our relationship to the environment and the unspoken hierarchies inherent in global exchange.
  • Early Influences: Harry's artistic sensibility was nurtured by a fascination with anthropology and ethnographic research, particularly focusing on Melanesian cultures—specifically Vanuatu—where he spent considerable time documenting traditional practices and exploring the intersections between indigenous knowledge and Western modernity.
  • Material Engagement: The artist’s signature technique involves repurposing discarded objects—often sourced from travel—transforming them into sculptural forms that simultaneously celebrate their materiality and critique their obsolescence. This deliberate choice reflects a broader philosophical stance rooted in Deleuze and Guattari's concept of “rhizomatic thinking,” rejecting linear narratives for interconnectedness and multiplicity.
  • Notable Exhibitions: Harry’s installations have garnered critical acclaim across international venues, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney (MCA), the National Gallery Victoria (NGV), and Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. His work has been recognized for its ability to capture the spirit of contemporary art biennials like Venice Biennale and Documenta.
Harry’s artistic vision is informed by a deep understanding of postcolonial theory, examining how colonial legacies continue to shape cultural representations and economic relations. He interrogates notions of “the Other,” challenging dominant perspectives that perpetuate stereotypes and silencing voices from marginalized communities. His sculptures often depict figures emerging from fragmented landscapes—a visual metaphor for the fractured identities resulting from migration and displacement.
  • Recurring Themes: Recurring motifs in Harry’s oeuvre include references to Pidgin languages, symbolizing the fluidity of communication across cultural boundaries; explorations of “gift economies,” highlighting alternative systems of exchange that prioritize reciprocity and social solidarity; and meditations on myths—particularly those associated with Vanuatu—as repositories of collective memory and resistance.
  • Recent Projects: Recent projects have centered around documenting the impact of Cyclone Pam on Vanuatu’s communities, resulting in collaborative artworks that combine sculptural elements with photographic documentation. These endeavors underscore Harry's commitment to artistic engagement with social justice issues.
Newell Harry’s contribution to contemporary art lies not merely in his stylistic innovations but also in his unwavering dedication to confronting uncomfortable truths about globalization and its consequences for vulnerable populations. Through his meticulous attention to detail—particularly the materiality of everyday objects—he compels viewers to reconsider their assumptions about value, representation, and the role of art in fostering dialogue across cultures. His work serves as a poignant reminder that profound insights can emerge from seemingly insignificant encounters with the world around us.
