Beskrivelse af samlerobjektet

From the Artist: This painting is a document of 2020, our losses, our fears, the courage of some, the venality of others and the abject delusion of others still. The year does not feel over or climbed out of. We lost John Lewis, RGB, George Floyd, and yet in our horror and disappointment and crying out for justice, their spirit made us stronger and as a people we grew. The Virus remains everywhere, mutating, murdering the innocent, yet we are in the midst of vaccines. In the painting, RGB and John Lewis rise, keeping us mindful of their lives’ truths to live up to. George Floyd shines out over a Nurse running with her patient to escape the Virus hurdling towards her. The skeletons, partying with their flag and emptied wine bottle are not where they thought. Nor are the family swimming in their inner tubes turned into Covid cells, Or Trump being squeezed by the Virus. The pulsing blue ventilation tubes trying to strangle the monster push the cells around, the used plastic gloves, trying their very best and the Va c c i n e ( g re e n fo r h e a l t h ) f i g h t i n g a g a i n s t t h e Pandemic. Then there is the lone Covid Virus with paint brushes and musical notes arising throughout it as the Artists attempts at being a different form of healing, benefiting humanity in another way than medical. Damn, this year must be better..

A Life Woven in Color: The Art of Susan Obrant

Susan Obrant’s artistic journey is a rich tapestry woven from diverse threads – dance, psychology, illustration, fashion, and an unwavering commitment to capturing the essence of movement and emotion. Born in Philadelphia in 1948, her early life was steeped in the vibrant energy of the city's artistic community, a foundation that would profoundly shape her creative spirit. From a youthful fascination with psychology – a path briefly pursued before she found her true calling – Obrant transitioned to Parsons School of Design, where she honed her skills as an illustrator and began to explore the intersection of art and design.

Her career took a pivotal turn when she was tasked with creating album cover art for Erik Satie’s music. This experience ignited a deep appreciation for the relationship between sound and visual representation, leading her to translate the rhythms and nuances of classical music into evocative paintings. This early work demonstrated a unique ability to capture the spirit of a piece through color and form – a characteristic that would become central to her artistic practice. The Grammy Award she received for this project stands as a testament to her innovative approach and its impact on the world of visual arts.

The Evolution of a Creative Vision

Obrant’s work has consistently evolved, reflecting both personal experiences and broader cultural influences. Early explorations in pen and ink led to a fascination with surrealism, evident in her playful use of imagery and her willingness to challenge conventional perspectives. She describes herself as a “spider with a bad habit,” a charmingly self-aware acknowledgement of her tendency to create unexpected and often whimsical pieces. This spirit of experimentation is further exemplified by her foray into couture crochet – a medium she initially encountered through her grandmother, sparking a lifelong passion for texture, form, and the tactile beauty of yarn.

Her work as a costume designer for dance companies like the HeidilatskyDance Company demonstrates a deep understanding of movement and how clothing can enhance and amplify it. She doesn’t simply create garments; she crafts extensions of the dancers' bodies, translating their energy into wearable art. This commitment to capturing dynamism is mirrored in her paintings, where figures seem poised on the verge of action, inviting the viewer to participate in a silent performance.

A World of Inspiration

Obrant’s artistic vision draws inspiration from a wide range of sources – from the natural world and classical music to literature and history. She cites Leonardo da Vinci as a key influence, admiring his ability to capture truth through observation and experimentation. The principles of movement and balance found in Mozart's compositions are reflected in her paintings, while the rich symbolism of Surrealist art continues to inform her approach to imagery. Her travels have also played a significant role, exposing her to diverse cultures and artistic traditions that enrich her creative palette.

Her work is not merely decorative; it’s imbued with a profound sense of observation and empathy. She seeks to capture the essence of human experience – joy, sorrow, movement, stillness – translating these emotions into tangible forms. The recurring motif of the mannequin in her installations—often dressed in her own creations—represents a dialogue between artifice and reality, inviting viewers to contemplate their own identities and relationships.

Recognition and Legacy

Throughout her career, Obrant has received numerous accolades for her innovative work. Beyond the Grammy Award for album cover design, she’s been recognized for her contributions to fashion illustration, costume design, and fine art. Her work has been exhibited in museums across the United States, including Hudson Valley MOCA in Peekskill, where she currently serves as an Artist Advisory Board member. Her pieces are also featured in prominent collections, demonstrating their enduring appeal and artistic merit.

Susan Obrant’s legacy extends beyond her individual creations; it lies in her fearless exploration of materials, techniques, and ideas. She has consistently pushed the boundaries of art and design, blurring the lines between disciplines and creating a body of work that is both visually stunning and deeply thought-provoking. Her commitment to experimentation, coupled with an unwavering passion for capturing the beauty and complexity of human experience, ensures her place as a significant figure in contemporary art.
