nancy edell, an american-born canadian artist, was born on november 12, 1942, in omaha, nebraska. she obtained her bachelor of fine arts in printmaking and contemporary dance from the university of nebraska omaha in 1964. edell's early life and education laid the groundwork for her future artistic endeavors.

artistic career

edell's practice included animated film, woodcut, monotypes, and drawing, often expressing surrealist themes. her work was rooted in feminism, drawing inspiration from dreams, religion, and politics. notable works include:
  • black pudding (1969), her first film, featuring a giant vagina belching out surrealistic creatures, showcasing her experimental approach to feminist themes.
  • her rug hooking practice, which pushed the boundaries between art and craft, as seen in her works at the nova scotia college of art and design.

edell won awards for her film work from festivals in paris, france (1972), and edinburgh, scotland (1969), as well as the first festival of women's films, new york city (1972), and the canada council.
