Artwork Description

Johan Gerritsz van Schoterbosch was a son of Gerrit Willemsz van Schoterbosch and Margriet Jansdr Ravelijn. In 1589, he married Weyntje Pietersdr Kies (c. 1569-1602). He held various functions at the beginning of the 17th century, including churchwarden and regent of the Heilige Geesthuis. It was only in 1614, however, that he became a member of the city council. He was appointed captain in the Haarlem civic guard in 1615, and served as a town councillor in 1615 and 1616. Like his brother Floris, Johan Gerritsz van Schoterbosch was a Remonstrant, and as such was banned from civic politics in 1618 when the Counter-Remonstrants gained the upper hand in the United Provinces. He did, however, continue to hold a few non-political functions, such as president of the hunting society. Johan van Schoterbosch lived to be around 90 years old.13 This portrait is a version of the ones Engelsz painted of Johan Gerritsz van Schoterbosch in 1618 and 1619.14 Cornelis Engelsz’s son Johannes Verspronck portrayed Johan van Schoterbosch in 1647 when he was 83 years old (SK-A-1253).15 Jonathan Bikker, 2007 See Bibliography and Rijksmuseum painting catalogues See Key to abbreviations and Acknowledgements This entry was published in J.
