Charles Seliger, a luminary of American abstract expressionism, emerged onto the artistic landscape in 1926, born in Manhattan. His formative years were marked by an early encounter with avant-garde sensibilities when he was included in Howard Putzel’s groundbreaking exhibition “A Problem for Critics” at the 67 Gallery in 1945 – a pivotal moment that propelled him into the orbit of influential figures like Jimmy Ernst, son of Max Ernst.
By nineteen, Seliger's artistic vision found expression in “Natural History: Form Within Rock,” a painting acquired by the Museum of Modern Art for its permanent collection. This acquisition solidified his position within the burgeoning New York School and established him as a disciple of Ernst’s father, Max Ernst.
Peggy Guggenheim recognized Seliger's talent immediately and championed his work in her gallery, “The Art of This Century,” in 1945. This association fostered collaborations with fellow artists like Jimmy Ernst, nurturing a shared commitment to exploring the expressive potential of abstraction.
