Descripción de la obra

Benefits is a work by the artist Dan Lam (Morong, Philippines, 1988). The daughter of Vietnamese migrants, born in the Philippines and raised in Texas, she generates sculptures that melt before the gaze of the spectators. Influenced by Lynda Benglis, the artist decided to start working with resin, glues, and plastic polymers. Her works, full of curves and bulges that spill over what supports them, are presented as organic elements before the viewer. “I want the sculptures to offer that illusion of being alive, but without needing to take drugs to see it,” says Dan Lam, who uses psychedelia and neon colours to turn the inert into a completely different reality.

Biografía del artista

Dan Lam

Dan Lam is an American sculptor of Vietnamese ancestry known for her vibrant ‘drippy’ sculptures using polyurethane foam & epoxy resin. Her work explores desire, disgust, and the boundary between beauty & grotesque, gaining recognition through social media and captivating audiences with its unsettling yet mesmerizing aesthetic. Born in Morsang, Philippines (1988), Lam's artistic journey began amidst the challenges of refugee life, fostering a profound connection to resilience and experimentation—qualities that would define her distinctive style.

Early Life & Education

Lam’s parents fled Vietnam in 1986, embarking on a nomadic path across Southeast Asia before establishing their home in Houston, Texas. Lam herself was born in a refugee camp in Morong, Bataan, Philippines, where she spent her formative months awaiting sponsorship from family in Houston. An only child, Lam cultivated an innate curiosity and fascination with materials—a passion that blossomed during her early art classes in grade school. She pursued her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Drawing and Painting at the University of North Texas and Arizona State University respectively, honing her skills and exploring diverse artistic approaches. Influenced by artists like Lynda Benglis, Lam began experimenting with unconventional materials—hot glue, resin, and plaster—pushing boundaries and challenging conventional sculptural techniques. This initial exploration established a foundation for her later stylistic innovations.

The Drippy Aesthetic & Conceptual Exploration

Lam’s signature style centers around “drippy” sculptures crafted from polyurethane foam and epoxy resin. These pieces deliberately juxtapose organic forms with synthetic materials, creating a tension that mirrors the artist's preoccupation with desire and disgust—themes she investigates through her art. Lam describes her process as "I want the sculptures to have that illusion of being alive, but you don’t need drugs to see it.” Her work isn’t merely about visual appeal; it prompts viewers to confront uncomfortable emotions and consider the psychological impact of confronting beauty alongside repulsion. The artist's exploration of this duality reflects a broader interest in challenging perceptions and questioning societal norms. She seeks to provoke contemplation and inspire dialogue, mirroring the spirit of Surrealist art movements.

Recognition & Influence

Lam gained significant recognition through her Instagram account, which amassed over 76,000 followers—including celebrities like Miley Cyrus—during her MFA program at Arizona State University. This burgeoning online presence coincided with growing acclaim for the importance of social media in fostering artistic dialogue and expanding an artist’s reach. Her sculptures have been featured prominently in publications such as *Architectural Digest*, *Forbes*, and *Travel + Leisure*, solidifying her position within contemporary art discourse. Collaborations with companies like Facebook, Virgin, and Meow Wolf further demonstrate Lam's ability to engage audiences across diverse platforms—a testament to her innovative approach and enduring artistic vision. Her work has been showcased in exhibitions ranging from New York to San Francisco, Paris, and Munich, cementing her reputation as a compelling voice within the global art landscape.

Current Projects & Future Directions

Dan Lam currently resides and works in Dallas, Texas, continuing to refine her sculptural practice and explore new avenues for artistic expression. Her ongoing collaborations with galleries like Square One Gallery and Holly Johnson Gallery underscore her commitment to fostering connections between artists and collectors—a dedication that reflects her belief in the transformative power of art and its ability to provoke contemplation and inspire dialogue. Lam’s future endeavors promise to further solidify her legacy as a sculptor who dares to confront uncomfortable truths while simultaneously celebrating the beauty inherent in unexpected combinations—a singular artistic perspective destined to resonate with audiences for years to come.
