Born in Aleppo, Syrian Arab Republic (1971), Nasser Hussein embarked on his artistic journey at Damascus University, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1997. Recognizing the importance of broadening his horizons, he pursued postgraduate studies at Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts and Siegen University between 2003 and 2006, honing his skills and refining his vision.
His artistic career gained momentum through participation in international biennales and group exhibitions, showcasing his talent to a wider audience. Notably, he exhibited at Latakia Biennale (2001) and Cairo International Biennale (2012), cementing his reputation as a compelling voice within contemporary Syrian art.
Hussein’s artistic practice centers around capturing the essence of solitude—a recurring motif in his oeuvre. He achieves this through meticulous observation and subtle manipulation of color palettes, favoring muted earthy tones that convey a sense of contemplative stillness.
Recurring images include women balancing their partners upside down—a gesture that simultaneously embodies grace and vulnerability—and men gazing into mirrors, reflecting on their own identities.
Hussein’s dedication to his craft has garnered considerable acclaim. He was awarded a scholarship from KAAD (Catholic Academic Exchange Service) allowing him to study abroad in Germany, furthering his artistic development and expanding his cultural understanding.
Hussein’s artistic approach—characterized by sensitivity to emotion and a masterful command of technique—resonates with audiences grappling with questions of identity and connection in the 21st century. His exploration of solitude serves as a poignant reminder of the human condition, prompting reflection on our relationship with ourselves and the world around us.
Dia Azzawi once remarked that Hussein’s paintings “explore the surrounding objects; to subject them to his visual scrutiny and to involve the viewer in that intimacy.”1970 - , Siria
