While making this collage I was thinking about the power we have as citizens to make real change with our votes, change our country desperately needs. I drew on the rich history of political imagery to create an artwork that captures the collective power we have and inspires people to exercise that power. A művész életrajza

Allison Belolan: An Exploration of Landscape and Emotion

Allison Belolan is an investigation-focused multidisciplinary artist whose practice embodies continued exploration, innovation, discovery and refinement. Her artwork invites viewers to notice, observe, and reflect upon the world around them—a core principle that informs her artistic vision from its inception. Born in United States of America (1978), Belolan’s journey as an artist began with a fascination for Printmaking at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where she graduated in 2001, marking the start of a career dedicated to capturing and interpreting natural environments through layered mixed media techniques.
  • Early Influences: Belolan’s artistic sensibilities were nurtured by her upbringing in America and fueled by an enduring appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the natural world. These formative experiences instilled within her a profound connection to landscapes and a desire to translate their essence into visual representations.
  • Jewelry Design & Return to Art Education: Following RISD, Belolan pursued jewelry design, honing her craft and developing an eye for detail—skills that would later prove invaluable in her return to art education at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) where she earned a Master’s degree in 2009.
  • Teaching Experience & TAB Philosophy: Her time as an Art Educator instilled within her a belief in Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB), emphasizing observation, experimentation and iterative refinement—principles that continue to shape her artistic process today.

The Landscape Collages – A Meditation on Observation

Belolan’s current work centers around landscape collages crafted primarily from handmade paper, repurposed materials and mixed media techniques. These compositions aren't merely depictions of places; they are expressions of emotion—a deliberate attempt to translate the feeling of encountering a particular environment into visual form. The artist meticulously documents her surroundings through photography, sketching and material collection, transforming these observations into layered textures and patterns that reveal surprising forms beneath initial appearances.
  • Material Exploration: Belolan’s process begins with gathering and sorting paper from magazines, old work and tissue papers—materials chosen for their translucency and ability to convey the essence of emotion itself.
  • Color Palette & Repetition: Limited color palettes and repetitive shapes encourage thoughtful consideration of details like subtly varying textures, edges and colors—elements that contribute to the overall aesthetic impact of each collage.
  • Tactile Engagement: Belolan’s artworks invite viewers to engage with them in a tactile way, encouraging a deeper level of connection and understanding through the materiality of the piece.

Artist Statement – Capturing Emotion Through Texture

“My work’s current focus is to explore relationships between the body, emotions, and the environment,” Belolan explains. “Recent work explores some of these ideas through abstract landscape collages. Creating each landscape is a meditative reflection and release of emotion, resulting in what I like to think of as Emotional Landscapes.” She emphasizes that her process begins with careful observation—capturing the nuances of light and texture—and translates these insights into layered compositions using handmade paper and repurposed materials. “Working within a limited color palette and using repetitive shapes encourages thoughtful observation of details like subtly varying textures, edges, and colors,” she adds. Ultimately, Belolan strives to create artwork that resonates with viewers profoundly, inviting them to reflect on their own experiences and memories of the environments surrounding them—a testament to the transformative power of artistic expression.

Future Directions – Continuing Exploration & Collaboration

Looking ahead, Allison Belolan remains dedicated to furthering her artistic practice through ongoing experimentation with papermaking techniques and collaborative projects with fellow artists and industry professionals. Her unwavering passion for observation and reflection—coupled with a commitment to pushing creative boundaries—promises to yield compelling new works that enrich the visual landscape of contemporary art.
