Descrizione dell'opera

From the Artist: When I read an essay published by Bridget Read in The Cut titled ‘Things we Heard’, it took me on a journey through the pandemic from the sounds experienced over 2020. Silence, sirens, clapping, protest, quiet, music. In overwhelming times, this classification of time by sensation helped me understand how to begin processing a profoundly altered personal and global world through my visual practice. This resulted in a six-part series of watercolor paintings. This painting addresses the thin, inscrutable threshold between life and the absence of life. Throughout the pandemic I could feel the walls of our apartment like membranes, the building like a body. I could hear thuds, soft voices, and sharp cries from neighbors across this membrane. During this time, my beloved grandfather lost his life to COVID. Alone, quarantined in a hospital, he passed away unable to be in the comfort of his loved ones. This severance of physical connection has prolonged and exacerbated our family’s ability to process our loss. In apartments, networks of disconnected communities, all over the world people are grieving loss of life, work, normality, and more. There is a grief pandemic alongside the COVID pandemic, and I wonder what such extensive collective grief might mean, and how it might manifest.

Biografia dell'artista

Michael David DiRosa: Bridging Silence and Sorrow Through Watercolor

Michael David DiRosa’s artistic journey began in New York City, where he absorbed the vibrant energy of urban life alongside a deep appreciation for philosophical contemplation. This duality—the bustling pulse of the city juxtaposed with introspective reflection—would become a cornerstone of his distinctive visual style and inform his ongoing exploration of themes like grief, memory, and connection.

  • Early Influences: DiRosa’s formative years were marked by exposure to diverse artistic traditions, including classical painting techniques honed during his studies at Emory University's Michael C. Carlos Museum of Art. These influences instilled in him a meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to mastering the subtleties of color and composition.
  • Watercolor Technique: DiRosa’s signature medium—watercolor—allows for an ethereal quality that perfectly captures the delicate balance between presence and absence. He skillfully utilizes layering, glazing, and blending to achieve luminous hues and evocative textures, mirroring the emotional resonance he seeks in his artwork.
  • Conceptual Depth: Beyond mere visual representation, DiRosa’s paintings delve into profound psychological explorations. Recurring motifs—such as fragmented landscapes and solitary figures—suggest a preoccupation with confronting existential anxieties and grappling with the complexities of human experience.

Exploring Themes of Loss and Remembrance

DiRosa's artistic output is deeply rooted in personal experiences, notably the loss of his grandfather during the COVID-19 pandemic. This profound grief served as a catalyst for introspection and fueled his creative endeavors. He seeks to convey the pervasive sorrow experienced by communities worldwide—a “grief pandemic” alongside the broader crisis—through evocative imagery that captures the intangible essence of bereavement.

  • The Pandemic’s Echoes: DiRosa's paintings reflect the anxieties and uncertainties engendered by the pandemic, portraying spaces imbued with a palpable sense of isolation. Yet, amidst this silence, he strives to illuminate moments of connection—fleeting glimpses of human interaction that underscore our shared vulnerability.
  • Symbolic Landscapes: Recurring landscapes in DiRosa’s work symbolize the fragility of existence and the impermanence of earthly beauty. These images invite contemplation on themes of mortality and remembrance, prompting viewers to confront their own relationship with time and loss.

Notable Achievements & Artistic Legacy

DiRosa's dedication to artistic excellence has garnered recognition within the contemporary art world. His paintings are exhibited at institutions like Emory University’s Michael C. Carlos Museum of Art, showcasing his ability to engage audiences with emotionally resonant narratives.

  • Collaborations & Exhibitions: DiRosa actively participates in collaborative projects and exhibitions, furthering dialogue between artists and fostering a broader understanding of artistic expression. His work has been featured prominently at David Nolan Gallery and Michaelskirche, demonstrating his versatility across mediums and venues.
  • Influence on Contemporary Art: DiRosa’s stylistic approach—characterized by meticulous technique and conceptual depth—has resonated with fellow artists seeking to explore themes of grief, memory, and existential contemplation. He stands as a testament to the transformative power of art in confronting profound human experiences.
