作品詳細説明

From the Artist: I am an architect; since the start of the Pandemic my business has slowed substantially. One of the activities I miss most is travelling to other cities and looking at the buildings. In lieu of this I began to frequent the Google Earth website. I noticed a great deal about the built environment from this view. I have been taking plein air lessons for the last few years, and I combined the painting techniques of plein air with the images of the built-scape from the air. Monterey, Mexico - This is a city block initially built with 28 identical homes, but over time each occupant has modified their home. Since this is a “theme and variations” I tried to relate the composition of the painting to Bach’s Goldberg Variations. There are 30 variations with an aria, or schematic image, at the beginning and end.

アーティストの略歴

A Life in Geometry: The Artistic Journey of Alan Robert Garry

Alan Robert Garry, born in New York City in 1950, embodies a fascinating trajectory—one that seamlessly weaves together the disciplines of architecture, sculpture, and painting. His artistic path wasn’t a direct ascent but rather an evolving exploration sparked by formal training at Stuyvesant High School and further cultivated during his studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he earned an architecture degree in 1972. This foundational education instilled within him not merely the principles of design, but a deep understanding of spatial relationships, structural integrity, and the power of geometric form—elements that would become hallmarks of his mature artistic style. While initially pursuing sculpture and painting after college, Garry’s professional life took a practical turn as he established his own architectural firm in New York City during the 1980s. Though architecture became his primary focus for many years, the creative impulse to paint never fully subsided, resurfacing with renewed vigor in 2020.

From Architectural Precision to Studio Exploration

The transition back to painting wasn’t a sudden shift but a gradual re-engagement with a long-held passion. Garry's unique approach blends the meticulous techniques of plein air oil painting—capturing fleeting moments and atmospheric conditions directly from life—with the detailed precision derived from his architectural background, and the wealth of visual data available through Google Earth imagery. This fusion is not merely technical; it reflects a deeper desire to distill the essence of urban landscapes, to express what he describes as “the unique geometry and color of each city.” His process involves careful drawing and drafting, reminiscent of blueprints and schematics, overlaid with the vibrancy and immediacy of oil paint. The result is a body of work that feels both grounded in reality and imbued with an abstract sensibility. He doesn’t simply *represent* cities; he dissects them, reassembles them through color and form, and presents a new vision—a celebration of their underlying structure and dynamic energy.

Influences and Artistic Development

While Garry's work is distinctly his own, it resonates with several key artistic movements and figures. The influence of Minimalism is readily apparent in the clean lines, bold shapes, and reduced palettes that characterize many of his paintings. He shares an affinity with artists like Agnes Martin and Sol LeWitt, who sought to strip away extraneous detail and focus on essential forms. However, Garry’s work diverges from pure abstraction through its clear connection to the physical world—the recognizable outlines of buildings, streets, and urban spaces. Furthermore, the plein air aspect introduces a sense of immediacy and atmospheric nuance that sets his paintings apart. His travels and enduring fascination with architecture serve as constant sources of inspiration, fueling his exploration of different cities and their unique visual identities. The artist’s statement reveals a commitment to capturing not just *what* a city looks like, but *how* it feels—its rhythm, its energy, its inherent geometry.

Exhibitions and Recognition

Since 2020, Garry has actively pursued exhibition opportunities, submitting his work to numerous regional, national, and international juried shows. His paintings have been featured in exhibitions across the United States, including those at the Virginia Beach Art Center, Schweinfurth Art Center, Cape Cod Museum of Art, and d’Art Center. This consistent participation in competitive venues demonstrates a growing recognition of his artistic talent and unique vision. Awards and honorable mentions received at shows like Rice Gallery's "City Life" competition and Hudson Valley Art Association Annual Juried Exhibition further validate the quality and impact of his work. His annual exhibition at Armonk provides a consistent platform for showcasing his latest creations to an appreciative audience.

Historical Significance and Future Directions

Alan Robert Garry’s work occupies a compelling space within contemporary art—bridging the gap between abstraction and representation, architecture and painting. He offers a fresh perspective on urban landscapes, moving beyond traditional depictions of cityscapes to explore their underlying structure and dynamic energy. His unique blend of techniques—plein air painting combined with architectural precision—creates paintings that are both visually striking and intellectually engaging. As he continues to submit his work to exhibitions and refine his artistic practice, Garry is poised to make an increasingly significant contribution to the contemporary art world. His dedication to capturing the essence of cities, coupled with his mastery of form and color, promises a future filled with compelling and thought-provoking artwork. The artist’s ongoing exploration of geometry, light, and space suggests a continued evolution of style and subject matter.
