作品の詳細

Manish Nai is known for works that reveal an abiding preoccupation with texture, layering and three-dimensionality. In a range of sculptures, paintings and murals, he has produced out of rugged jute fabric works of quiet and contemplative beauty. The son of a burlap and packing materials dealer, Nai’s experiments started in the final year of art school when he began to integrate jute into his canvases. He first created abstract paintings by using a jute fabric base from which he removed threads to reveal abstract patterns. Eventually, these led to sculptures made by compressing and molding burlap into cubes, creating highly textured yet minimalist sculptures through an unpredictable and time-consuming process. One of Nai’s exhibits is an untitled sculpture (2014) made of molded Indigo blue jute. Nai here deviates for the first time from rectangular sculptures, exploring a more technically challenging circular form. The result is a heavily compressed, earthy sculpture that evokes associations with nature– from a whirling oceanic pool to a calm night sky. Also displayed is another untitled work (2014)– an abstract mural subtly traced onto a specially prepared pale grey wall. Nai’s murals begin as hand drawings. These are then converted into a digital form and copied on to stencils that are used to create dark grey and white patterns directly on the wall, creating a three-dimensional effect. The layered pixels branch out from a hollow centre, evoking both the serenity of a distant starburst and the vigorous outward expansion of a human settlement viewed from above.

作家の略歴

Manish Nayi: Bridging Tradition and Modernity Through Textured Abstraction

Manish Nayi is an Indian contemporary artist born in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, in 1980. He’s recognized for his distinctive approach to abstract art—primarily utilizing humble materials like jute fabric, newspapers, and cow dung—to explore the dialogue between India's rich heritage and the dynamism of its present-day urban landscape. His artistic journey began with a diploma in Drawing and Painting from the LS Raheja School of Art in Mumbai, where he honed his skills and established himself as a visionary artist deeply rooted in both Eastern aesthetics and experimental techniques.
  • Early Influences: Nayi’s formative years were marked by exposure to traditional Indian art forms, particularly miniature painting and folk art traditions. These influences instilled in him an appreciation for intricate detail and symbolic representation—elements that would later permeate his own artistic vocabulary.
  • The Genesis of Textured Abstraction: His breakthrough came with a pivotal experiment involving gunny sackcloth and canvas. Recognizing the potential to transform ordinary materials into vehicles for expressive abstraction, Nayi meticulously crafted complex patterns by cutting away sections of the fabric warp—a technique that revitalized the field of abstraction in an era dominated by figurative art.
  • Recognition and Awards: Demonstrating exceptional talent, Nayi received prestigious accolades including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award from New York (2004–05) and the ROSL Visual Arts Scholarship from London (2014), cementing his position as a rising star in the international art scene.

Exploring Materiality and Time: Recurring Themes in His Work

Nayi’s artistic practice consistently investigates the relationship between materiality and time—concepts that are central to his conceptual framework. He deliberately employs discarded materials like old newspapers and cartons, imbuing them with a layered narrative that speaks to the passage of time and the impact of environmental concerns. This conscious selection of mediums isn't merely stylistic; it’s a deliberate provocation designed to challenge conventional notions of artistic expression. His monumental murals—often depicting scenes of urban decay juxtaposed against vibrant botanical imagery—further amplify this thematic preoccupation, mirroring the cyclical rhythms of nature alongside the relentless pace of contemporary life.
  • Murals as Reflections: Nayi’s murals serve as visual meditations on themes of regeneration and transformation, reflecting his belief that art can offer insights into broader societal issues.
  • Photography's Role: He utilizes photography to capture fleeting moments—often documenting the ephemeral beauty of urban spaces before they are overtaken by commercial development—demonstrating a commitment to preserving cultural heritage while simultaneously engaging with contemporary realities.

Notable Exhibitions and Recognition

Manish Nayi’s artistic vision has garnered international acclaim, resulting in numerous solo exhibitions and participation in prominent biennials across the globe. Key achievements include:
  • Galerie Karsten Greve Representation: He is currently represented by Galerie Karsten Greve, Cologne and Paris, showcasing his evolving body of work to discerning audiences worldwide.
  • Kochi Biennial Participation (2016): His inclusion in the Kochi Biennale cemented his reputation as a significant voice within the Indian contemporary art landscape.
  • Shanghai Biennale Appearance (2018): He showcased his artistic explorations at the Shanghai Biennale, attracting critical attention and furthering his international visibility.

Contemporary Artistic Practice

Currently residing in Mumbai, India, Manish Nayi continues to push boundaries within abstract art, consistently experimenting with innovative techniques and conceptual approaches. His ongoing projects delve into themes of urban decay and regeneration, mirroring the complexities of modern life while honoring traditions rooted in Indian culture. He remains committed to utilizing humble materials—such as jute fabric and cow dung—to create artworks that are both aesthetically compelling and intellectually stimulating, solidifying his legacy as a pioneering artist who champions artistic experimentation alongside social responsibility.
