작품 상세 설명

The first drawing is a representation of an old photograph –one of the first ones taken with flash– of some wild animals, captured at the moment when, surprised by the shot of the camera in the middle of the darkness, start to run off. The second shows the same representations, but only partially: part of the drawing is blocked, incomplete, obscured, glitched. Instead, we see the emptiness, a surface covered by some material that appears as the evidence of a labor, the temporality of a repetitive and monotonous action. In this work, we find contraposed the reference to a universe of images that fluctuates between the anonymous origin and the subjective world of memory and self-reference. The drawings become critical signs, expose their own objectuality and show their artifice. Absurd gesture and physical manifestation of a broader interest, linked to an investigation on temporality and forms, through which we come to understand the world. Early Life and Artistic Foundations

Nicolás Pontón, a compelling voice in contemporary Argentine art, was born in Buenos Aires, the vibrant cultural heart of Argentina. His formative years were steeped in the city’s rich artistic tradition, an environment that would profoundly shape his aesthetic sensibilities. Pontón embarked on his formal artistic journey at the Universidad Nacional de las Artes (UNA), completing his Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts between 2002 and 2007. This period was crucial for establishing a strong technical foundation and exploring diverse artistic approaches, but it wasn’t merely academic rigor that defined his early development. He actively sought opportunities to broaden his horizons, participating in the prestigious FNA-Conti scholarship program in 2014—a pivotal moment that signaled recognition of his burgeoning talent and provided valuable support for his creative endeavors.

A Period of Exploration: Residencies and Expanding Perspectives

Driven by a desire to engage with different artistic communities and refine his unique style, Pontón embarked on a series of international residencies. These experiences proved transformative, exposing him to new methodologies, critical perspectives, and cultural contexts. He undertook residencies in the United States at both the Vermont Studio Center and Djerassi AIR, immersing himself in the American art landscape. Further broadening his scope, he spent time in the Netherlands with Stitching Kaus Australis and in Germany at Neue Heimat and Zentralwerk AIR. These sojourns weren’t simply about geographical relocation; they were intensive periods of experimentation, pushing him to challenge preconceived notions and integrate new influences into his work. The impact of these residencies is visible in the evolving complexity of his compositions and a growing willingness to embrace abstraction alongside figurative elements.

Themes and Techniques: Captivating Paintings & Intricate Compositions

Pontón’s art is characterized by a captivating interplay between figuration and abstraction, often rendered with a nuanced palette and meticulous attention to detail. His paintings are not easily categorized; they exist in a liminal space, suggesting narratives without explicitly defining them. There's a deliberate ambiguity present in his work—a sense of fragmented memories or half-formed thoughts that invites the viewer to participate actively in the creation of meaning. He masterfully employs layering techniques, building up surfaces with subtle textures and washes of color. This creates a depth and richness that draws the eye inward, encouraging prolonged contemplation. His compositions often feature recurring motifs—architectural elements, fragmented figures, and organic forms—that function as symbolic anchors within the broader abstract framework.

Recognition and Achievements: A Rising Star in the Argentine Art Scene

Pontón’s dedication to his craft has garnered significant recognition within Argentina's dynamic art scene. He has been selected as a finalist for numerous prestigious awards, including the Premio Klemm, Premio UADE, Premio Itaú, Premio Fundación Andreani, Premio Williams, Salón de pintura del Banco central and Premio Fundación Fortabat—testament to the quality and originality of his work. A particularly noteworthy achievement was receiving the Beca creación FNA (Creation Grant from the National Fund for the Arts), which provided crucial financial support for a period of focused artistic production. He further solidified his position with first prize at the XIII Salón Nacional de Arte Contemporáneo MUNT in 2017 and second prize at the 94th edition of the Salón Nacional de Santa Fe that same year, followed by winning the 1st Prize Premio Proyecto A in its 9th edition (2010). These accolades demonstrate a consistent trajectory of artistic growth and critical acclaim.

Co-directing "La Copia" & Continued Evolution

Since 2019, Pontón has co-directed the project “La Copia” alongside Alejandro Montaldo. This collaborative venture reflects his ongoing interest in exploring themes of reproduction, interpretation, and the very nature of artistic creation. “La Copia” serves as a platform for experimentation and dialogue, further enriching his artistic practice. Currently residing and working in Vancouver, Canada, Pontón continues to push boundaries and refine his unique visual language. His work represents a compelling synthesis of personal experience, intellectual inquiry, and technical mastery—solidifying his position as a significant figure in contemporary Latin American art.
