John Bulloch Souter (1890–1972) was a Scottish painter who achieved considerable renown during the Jazz Age, primarily celebrated for his evocative portraits of prominent figures and his striking depiction of “The Breakdown,” a monumental canvas reflecting the turbulent socio-political landscape of post-World War I Britain.
Born in Aberdeen, Souter’s artistic journey began with formal training at Elsie Cruikshank (mother), fostering an early appreciation for meticulous observation and nuanced rendering.
