Opis zbirateljskega predmeta

Passionate about archeology and fragments of history, Simone Fattal places the concept of memory at the heart of her reflections. By manipulating the earth, the artist creates gauche figures, where the body becomes the landscape for tiny hills, under the pressure of her fingertips. The works she creates, with a technique reminiscent of that used in the work of Postman Cheval, delicately realize a timeless, intricate jumble, which intertwines ancient history, archeological culture, and the contemporary world.

Biografija umetnika

Simone Fattal: Sculptor of Myth and Emotion

Simone Fattal (Arabic: سيمون فتال; born 1942) stands as a singular voice in contemporary sculpture and painting, forging an artistic path marked by profound engagement with mythology, history, and the complexities of human experience. Born in Damascus, Syria, Fattal’s upbringing amidst turbulent geopolitical shifts instilled within her a sensitivity to narrative and transformation—themes that permeate her oeuvre. Her education encompassed Beirut and Paris, where she honed her philosophical understanding alongside rigorous artistic training at the École des Lettres and the École du Louvre, establishing a foundation for her distinctive approach. Returning to Beirut in 1969, Fattal embarked on her professional journey as a painter, quickly gaining recognition for her evocative imagery and masterful technique.
  • Early Influences: Fattal’s artistic vision was shaped by encounters with Surrealist luminaries like André Breton and Joan Miró during her formative years in Paris, fostering an appreciation for dreamlike landscapes and subconscious exploration.
  • Sculptural Exploration: Moving into sculpture in the late 1980s, Fattal embraced clay as her primary medium, allowing her to translate abstract concepts into tangible forms. Her sculptures often depict figures emerging from fragmented surfaces—a deliberate strategy mirroring the process of uncovering hidden narratives and confronting challenging realities.
  • Collaboration with Etel Adnan: Fattal’s relationship with poet Etel Adnan proved pivotal in shaping her artistic sensibilities, fostering a shared commitment to exploring themes of exile, memory, and identity. Their partnership extended beyond creative collaboration, establishing a deep bond rooted in intellectual discourse and mutual respect.

Major Works and Artistic Style

Fattal’s sculptural output is characterized by monumental scale and textural richness—elements that contribute to the visceral impact of her pieces. Notable works include “Lion Guarding the Entrance,” a striking sculpture depicting a stylized lion confronting an imposing stone wall, symbolizing resilience against oppression and guarding the entrance to hidden knowledge. Similarly, "Fallen Figure" presents a fragmented torso emerging from a dark expanse, conveying vulnerability and hinting at the disintegration of established structures—a motif recurring throughout her artistic explorations. Fattal’s paintings demonstrate a masterful command of color and composition, often employing bold hues juxtaposed against muted backgrounds to heighten emotional resonance. Her stylistic hallmark lies in blending figurative representation with abstract elements, creating images that simultaneously evoke recognizable forms and invite contemplation on universal themes.

Museum Exhibitions and Recognition

Simone Fattal’s sculptures have garnered international acclaim, appearing in prestigious museums across Europe and North America. Her work has been showcased at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, mumok – Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien in Vienna, Sharjah Art Foundation in Sharjah, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, cementing her position as a leading figure in contemporary sculpture. Furthermore, Fattal’s contribution to artistic discourse was recognized by the prestigious AWARE prize for women artists—a testament to her unwavering dedication to creative excellence and her commitment to promoting female voices within the art world.

Legacy and Continuing Influence

Simone Fattal's enduring legacy resides in her ability to transform historical narratives into emotionally charged artworks. Her sculptures confront viewers with uncomfortable truths—challenging conventions and prompting reflection on societal injustices. Fattal’s exploration of mythology—particularly the symbolism of lions and fallen figures—continues to inspire artists globally, demonstrating the timeless relevance of her artistic vision. Currently residing in Sausalito, California, Fattal remains active as a sculptor and painter, furthering her artistic endeavors and ensuring that her distinctive voice persists within the realm of contemporary art.
