Notably, his tutelage from Arno Mohr and Ernst Vogenauer fostered an understanding of humanist ideals within the context of socialist art.
Bertram's early style was characterized by simplicity and lyricism, evident in his illustrations for the East German magazine Sibylle. He was a member of SED (Socialist Unity Party of Germany) since 1977 and became a full professor at Weißensee Academy in 1977.
