John Bulloch Souter (1890–1972) was a Scottish painter who achieved considerable renown during the Jazz Age, primarily celebrated for his evocative portraits of prominent figures and his striking depiction of “The Breakdown,” a monumental canvas reflecting the turbulent socio-political landscape of post-World War I Britain.
Born in Aberdeen, Souter’s artistic journey began with formal training at Elsie Cruikshank (mother), fostering an early appreciation for meticulous observation and nuanced rendering. His formative years coincided with the burgeoning modernist movement, exposing him to influences ranging from Impressionism to Cubism—though he steadfastly adhered to a realist style, prioritizing accuracy and capturing psychological depth within his subjects.
Souter’s artistic output spanned decades, producing over 300 paintings and drawings that explore themes of Scottish landscape, portraiture, and still life.
